string(1686) "The acclaimed philanthropic group, Holiday Express, brings its “Ultimate Holiday Show” to The Count Basie Theatre. Featuring 50 professional musicians and singers on stage, Holiday Express blends its unique mixture of traditional, gospel, and rock’n soul holiday music in a spectacular performance that will touch you with the spirit of the season.

Now in its 25th season, Holiday Express is a traveling holiday party, a from-the-heart troupe of musicians bringing music, friendship, help and hope to those too often left out in the cold at the most special time of the year. The band normally plays far from the limelight, in sometimes desperate circumstances, and all for absolutely no pay. Made up of more than 100 of the best musicians on the Jersey Shore, the Holiday Express volunteer musicians will play this year in 100 shows between November 6th and Christmas Eve. At each event, the musicians along with several dozen support staff, will deliver not only music, but, clothing, food and fun to adults and children in need, including veterans, the mentally and physically challenged, individuals in addiction and recovery programs, the isolated and the homeless.

Sponsored by Stillwell-Hansen on December 18th
Sponsored by Investors Bank on December 19th

*Parking is only available for the December 19th event.

string(1677) "Darlene Love and friends will be bringing the holiday spirit to the stage, performing both Christmas classics and Love’s own greatest hits. Her Billboard hits include: “The Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” “Wait ‘Til My Bobby Gets Home,” “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” and the #1 holiday classic “Christmas Baby Please Come Home,” a song that she performed annually with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Symphony Orchestra on The Late Show With David Letterman for 29 years.

Darlene Love received her industry’s highest award when Bette Midler inducted her into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During the celebration, the two ladies enjoyed performing “He’s A Rebel” together. As part of the festivities, Darlene also sang “He’s A Fine, Fine Boy” backed by another distinguished fan, Bruce Springsteen. Darlene continues to captivate audiences world wide and Rolling Stone Magazine has proclaimed Darlene Love to be “one of the greatest singers of all time!”

Remember Jones is a one-of-a-kind soul/pop singer, storyteller and bandleader with a throwback vibe and authentic energy that bring audiences to another time and place. Whether you see him fronting a piano, a 4-piece band, or a soul orchestra of 25, Remember Jones evokes the energy of the great front men and women, with one of a kind song styling

One of the first plays authored by an African-American to be performed on Broadway (it debuted in 1961), Black Nativity delivers a powerful message of joy, hope, victory and liberation. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes first achieved prominence in the mid-1970s, emerging from the same New Jersey Shore music scene as his now legendary contemporary and friend Bruce Springsteen. Southside’s first three albums, I Don’t Want To Go Home, This Time It’s for Real, and Hearts of Stone, were produced by band co-founder Steven Van Zandt (E Street Band, The Sopranos), and largely featured songs written by Van Zandt and/or Springsteen. The Van Zandt-written “I Don’t Want To Go Home” became Southside’s signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. In 1982 Rolling Stone Magazine voted Hearts of Stone among the top 100 albums of the 1970s and 1980s. With their classic blend of hard-core R&B and street-level rock, molten grooves, soulful guitar licks and blistering horn section, Johnny and his Jukes continue to put their unique stamp on the Jersey Shore sound, while recalling the glory years of Otis Redding and similar Stax Records titans. Many of us have worked around the area music and arts scene for years, and we knew Pat to be not only a driving force for rock, pop and everything in between, but a kind soul and a consummate performer. He will be missed in these parts, and many others. We will update this page as necessary regarding this performance.
Carteret natives The Smithereens are one of the best rock bands in the history of the Garden State. Formed in 1980, the band is currently made up of original lead singer and Scotch Plains native Pat DiNizio, original guitarist and backup vocalist Jim Babjak, bassist Severo Jornacion and the band’s longtime drummer, Dennis Dinken. [caption id="attachment_3656" align="alignright" width="500"] The Basie’s open-floor concert configuration, shown here during a private event earlier this year[/caption] Known for songs like “A Girl Like You,” “Only A Memory,” “Too Much Passion” and others, The Smithereens continue to be a staple of New Jersey rock radio, borne from an era when underground and new wave rock pierced airwaves nationwide, birthing music history like MTV’s “120 Minutes,” the grunge era, and – ultimately – the alternative rock era. The Smithereens’ brand of power pop landed their sound onto soundtracks (Dangerously Close) and television shows (Miami Vice), while their video for “Blood And Roses” received positive attention during MTV’s late 80s heyday. As the lead singer and powerhouse behind the band Scandal, Patty Smyth’s distinctive voice and songwriting skills helped her produce a slew of well-known singles, including the Scandal smashes “The Warrior,” “Goodbye To You,” “Beat Of A Heart” and “Love’s Got A Line On You,” plus “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough,” a Top 10 duet with Don Henley.  Scandal, also known in these parts as an early outlet for a young guitarist named Jon Bon Jovi, features Smyth, original guitarist Keith Mack, bassist Tom Welsch and drummer Eran Asias. Together, The Smithereens and Scandal ft. Patty Smyth will make Basie history on January 13th, performing in the first-ever public concert in the historic theater’s “club” format.  With a stage built over the theater seats to create an intimate, open-floor atmosphere, the idea is to give fans a peek of what’s to come when the Basie completes its expansion and opens doors to an all-new, 800-capacity performance space to complement the venue’s historic theater.       Presented by Count Basie Theatre" ["post_title"]=> string(98) "The Smithereens · Patty Smyth & Scandal
