THE TV/FILM ACTOR
Using scripts from commercials, film and television, students will explore skills necessary for on-screen acting. Students will gain an understanding of the differences in acting for the camera and performing live. Developing self expression, clear diction and a confident, focused attitude are goals that will be addressed in this session.

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is considered one of his darkest and most powerful tragedies. The play dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when evil is chosen as a way to fulfil one’s ambition for power. In this workshop students will be immersed into the Elizabethan world as they unravel the words of the Bard and delve into the motivating influences behind each character. Participants should bring a prepared monologue.

MODERN & THEATRE DANCE INTENSIVE WEEK

This camp is taught by the dancers and director of Derling Dance Arts, a dynamic young modern dance company. The week include daily, hour-long classes in a variety  of theatrical dance styles, an hour of modern dance technique, and an hour of  choreographed sequences from the company’s repertoire. PREPARING YOUR MUSICAL AUDITION WEEK

Whether you’re preparing to audition as a collegiate music major, want to ace your choral solo or earn a part in a local production, this course will review tried and true preparation strategies. Guided by music educator, performer and  composer Kris Zook, the class will work as a team to select an appropriate repertoire, and prepare for scenarios in an effort to sharpen confidence during auditions and interview situations. Discussions on college selection, vocal technique, appropriate  attire, resumes, repertoire lists and other related topics will also be included.

Students will learn the art of improv through a series of exercises and games taught by Michael O’Keeffe, director of the Count Basie Theatre’s Teen Improv Troup. Designed for both serious actors as well as those interested in dabbling with improv, this class will help students to think on their feet and to develop creative problem-solving skills. These techniques are also valuable tools for actors looking to dig deep and create more believable characters.

SINGING IN HARMONY WEEK

Students will build their vocal skills and develop an understanding of harmony and music theory. By learning to sing correctly,  students will strengthen their diaphragm and support muscles, creating a better singer in the process. Singing is one of the best ways to develop sound awareness skills critical to becoming a better reader. Dr. Suzanne Canizares, who holds a PhD in language and literacy, says it best: “songs are filled with rhymes, alliteration, and different sound patterns -- they actually  celebrate the sounds of language.”  Mr. Mottern’s classes provide an engaging and motivating environment in which young learners can blossom. SHAKESPEARE PRIMER WEEK

The perfect introduction to appreciating and understanding Shakespeare’s lasting legacy! Students will invent new words and compose sonnets inspired by the Bard’s best-known and celebrated works of art. Ms. Pamm’s passion for the words and works of Shakespeare is the catalyst behind her highly imaginative approach to this weeklong camp. For those wishing to delve into Shakespeare’s powerfully imaginative  world, this is a perfect place to start.

This is a fast-paced, performance-based session, incorporating singing, dance and acting techniques.  Musical theatre is the basis of the materials reviewed here, with an emphasis on singing, blocking, and script work. The week culminates with an in-class demonstration for parents and friends. The perfect class to build confidence while honing your performance skills. Students should bring a daily snack and a blank audio CD.

TEEN VOICE AND HARMONY WEEK

Students will develop proper vocal and breathing techniques and posture, blending, and the importance of listening to one another to create dynamic ensemble pieces and group harmonies. Ensemble  singing is collaborative process and a valuable skill for all young singers. An informal in-class performance for parents and friends will be held at the end of the week. Students should bring a daily snack and a blank audio CD.
 
 
TEEN ACTING WEEK

Follow Ms. Giustiniani to Emerald City in this fun filled introduction to musical theatre that focuses on the songs, characters and  dialogue from this all-time favorite musical. A short classroom demonstration will be held at the end of the week for parents and friends.

This week-long, fun-filled intensive hones your stage and musical theatre skills and unleashes your inner performer. KIDS ON CAMERA WEEK

An excellent introduction to the world of television and film. Classroom exercises and games are designed to help students overcome shyness while promoting strong speaking and ‘camera- ready’ performance styles. Class focus is on helping students  develop a natural and spontaneous line delivery.

Actual television and commercial scripts will be used to create exercises for campers during this session. One of the primary goals is to instill a strong sense of self-confidence, self-expression  and crisp clear diction in each student.

POP/ROCK PERFORMANCE AND TECHNIQUE WEEK

This camp is an opportunity to work with Broadway veteran (Smokey Joe’s Café) and multi-faceted performer, Deb Lyons.  This seasoned professional’s techniques will help young vocalists navigate high notes and connect to the lyric. This class includes vocal exercises,  audition skills, the inside scoop on what it takes to ‘land the gig’ and emphasizes solo stage performance.

COMEDY WEEK

Comedy Week classes include all forms of comedy: sketch (i.e.: Saturday Night Live), improvisation, (Who’s Line Is It Anyway?) and stand-up. Instructor Michael O’Keeffe has performed over 6000 comedy shows worldwide, most recently with renowned comedians Wayne Brady and Jonathan Mangum. As Creative Director of the Improv Jam Comedy Lab (New Jersey’s only full time interactive comedy troupe), O’Keefe brings over 20 years of teaching comedy to this fast paced and undoubtedly hilarious week long intensive for aspiring comedians.  A performance for parents and friends will be held in the classroom on the last day of the camp.

This intensive, weeklong session allows students to study techniques of classical vocal performance by exploring the stories and  composers behind some of the great operas. Voice placement, breathing, diction and acting the lyric will all be incorporated. Academy Award©-winning actress Meryl Streep credits her early operatic training for her facility with accents and impersonations – so this is a valuable class for musical theatre lovers as well as those whose gravitate towards classical music. An informal in-class demonstration for parents and friends will be held at the end of the week. Students should bring a daily snack and a blank audio CD.     

WRITE AND PERFORM YOUR OWN MUSICAL THEATRE SCENES WEEK

Guided by music educator, performer and composer Kris Zook, this group will work to develop characters, formulate musical numbers and dances around a storyline, and then breathe life into each of them all with little time and a shoestring budget. If you’re a writer, composer, songwriter, lyricist, actor, singer or dancer with a passion for musicals and love of collaboration, then we want you. Be prepared for a challenge!
 
MAKEUP TECHNIQUES FOR THE STAGE WEEK

From zombies to sopranos to ballerinas, it’s important for actors, singers and dancers to be skilled at applying stage makeup. In addition to the basics, Ms. Taylor will include aging, fantasy and horror makeup methods in this week-long camp. An additional fee for supplies is included in the weekly session cost.

BEGINNER SONG WRITING WEEK

Students will learn the foundations of songwriting, including the function and characteristics of verse, chorus and bridge through  listening and analyzing some of the great songs throughout radio history -- including today’s hits! Students will the in-class opportunity  to share what they create and receive feedback. It’s encouraged - but not required - for students to accompany themselves with  an instrument.

POP ROCK VOCAL WEEK

MAKING AND USING PUPPETS WEEK

For crafty and creative youngsters this session includes creating puppets from paper maché, paper bags, sock, paper cups and popsicle sticks. Using the puppets and creating characters and voices will round out this innovative arts week. A perfect combination of multiple challenges designed to motivate and strengthen students sense of self while encouraging concentration and use of the imagination. For students who are shy, working with puppets is often a perfect way to promote a greater use of speech.

Join Rockit this summer as we present an educational musical program for young musicians. Learn the dynamics of playing in a band with students who have the same passion for music. Experience first-hand how Rockit has become the premier music program in  Monmouth County. Learn how to audition and play in a band with confidence and discipline, form your own band and choose songs.Learn improvisation and music theory, watch live band demonstrations and learn how different musical sections are combined to  produce a song. Participants will perform an intimate concert in the Count Basie Theatre rehearsal room.

REQUIREMENTS
Vocalists, drummers, guitarists, bass guitarists, keyboardists, brass and string players are encouraged to join our camp. All students must have had private music studies for at least eight months.

ROCKIT AT THE BASIE STUDIO RECORDING CAMP

This innovative weeklong camp will cover: laying down tracks; recording and completing your own song with a band; microphone use placement and patterns when recording instruments; how each instrument is processed, tracked and overdubbed; the basics of starting a session in pro tools and mixing the audio with emphasis on EQ, and mastering. Camp is appropriate for musicians or those interested in the engineering process. Musicians will have the opportunity to have their instruments recorded for a CD created during the week-long camp perspective.

Students will work on oral presentation and speaking skills throughout this innovative, three-session workshop. Much like the performance styles of John Leguizamo, Chazz Palminteri or Tyler Perry, this workshop uses personal stories as the basis for developing strong and engaging oral presentations. Through sharing your own “truths” and empowering yourself through listening to others, you gain a deeper understanding of who we are collectively.
