Learn the basics of becoming a bona-fide stage actor with tips and tricks from a seasoned instructor, leading into an end-of-session performance for family and friends. ACTING FOR TV AND FILM

Using scripts from real commercials, students will explore skills necessary for onscreen acting. Individual needs will be assessed, and classes are designed to challenge and motivate through script and monologue work, cold reads, the slating process, and reading from cue cards. Using onsite video, students can self-assess and analyze their work.

THE TV/FILM ACTOR

This 10-week Academy class goes deep to explore the differences in acting for television and film. DIALECTS AND DICTION

Speaking clearly and crisply and picking up on accents are skills that every actor must master. Students will explore some of the most frequently used dialects in popular musical theater and drama, like Standard British, Cockney, Irish and American Southern.

TEEN IMPROVISATION

This Academy session encourages risk-taking and includes a wide variety of games and exercises designed to stimulate creativity and “in-the-moment” thinking skills. Young actors will learn important techniques to allow them to dig deeper to create memorable characters, all under the guidance of the director of the Count Basie Theatre’s Teen Improv Troupe.

PRIVATE ONE-ON-ONE VOCAL COACHING

Broadway veteran Deb Lyons is available for eight weeks of private, one-on-one private lessons. Individual instruction offers specific and targeted exercises to build vocal control and expand on a singer’s vocal strengths, so that each vocalist can reach his or her maximum potential. A room will be provided for students to warm up vocally before their private session.

ADULT IMPROVISATION

In this 10 week session, Mr. O’Keeffe uses theater games and group exercises to teach the fundamentals of improvisation. Founder of Improv Jam and the Director of the Count Basie’s Teen Improv Troupe, O’Keeffe brings his own style and engaging personality to this very popular class.

SHOW CHOIR

Popular in the Midwest and gaining national momentum, show choirs provide a great outlet for high-energy, music-loving singers and dancers. Seussical, Jr. is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! All of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, - from Horton the Elephant, to The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and more - come to life in this four-week musical theater experience. The camp will culminate with a fully staged, elaborately costumed production in the Academy building’s new performance space. Students will be challenged and have a great deal of fun in the process!

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

Act in one of Shakespeare’s most farcical comedies, with humor driven by slapstick and mistaken identity, plus puns and wordplay -- a hilarious, rollicking romp into true Elizabethan theater. This intensive, four-week camp will conclude with a fully mounted production of The Comedy of Errors in the Academy building’s new performance space.

ROCKIT! LIVE FOUNDATION SUMMER BAND CAMP

Join Rockit! At The Basie this summer and explore the dynamics of playing in a band and how to audition and perform with confidence and discipline. Students will form their own bands and choose their own songs, learn improvisation and music theory, receive audio recordings of their work and interact through activities like “Name That Riff” and rock and roll trivia. All the while, students will experience firsthand why Rockit! has produced students who have gone on to compete on NBC’s The Voice and Fox’s The X-Factor, perform with artists like Keith Urban and Steve Vai, and produce superstars like The Voice’s Jacquie Lee. Each week will culminate with a live concert for family and friends.

JAZZ ARTS ACADEMY CAMP

The Jazz Arts Academy at the Basie lets you learn from an all-star, all pro faculty. Students will receive comprehensive training on their instrument, and receive guidance in improvisation, music theory and jazz history. The program features group lessons, individual coaching and listening sessions, as well as master classes with visiting artists and free access to summer JazzFest™ concerts here in Red Bank. All instruments welcome and student musicians will also be invited to perform at the Jazz Arts Academy Showcase, Friday, July 29th at Two River Theater.

MUSIC, RHYTHM AND SONG

By using instruments, singing and movement, this high energy, interactive experience provides a perfect opportunity for your student’s self-expression and creativity. This camp gives youngsters the opportunity to learn rhythm, beat, and melody basics, while strengthening focus, listening skills and sharing the joy of music with their peers.

READER’S THEATER

Award winning playwright, director and actor Ryan Ward will guide students through a group brainstorm to write and develop a true piece of theater. The Reader’s Theater strategy combines reading practice and performance, with the goal of enhancing both reading skills and student confidence by practicing reading with a purpose. A presentation for parents and friends will be held at the end of this week-long creative camp experience.

TELLING STORIES THROUGH SONGWRITING

Through a variety of exercises and prompts, songwriter and educator Sam Levine will guide students on a musical journey to explore the process of songwriting. Students will use rhyme, meter, emotion and imagery as they write the lyrics to tell personal stories in an impactful, musical way. An informal in-class presentation for parents and friends will be held at weeks’ end.

TELLING STORIES THROUGH VISUAL ARTS

Using the styles of daVinci, Warhol, Miro and Van Gogh, students will explore a variety of techniques to create self-portraits. Instructor Barbara Levine - recognized by the New Jersey Art Educators Association for her work in the classroom - is known for her outstanding ability to bring out the artist in every child, empowering them with knowledge and skills of self-expression. Students will create a mini-portfolio of artwork during this visually-inspiring camp session.

THINK LIKE A SHARK! CREATING A BROADWAY REVIVAL

Have you ever witnessed a Broadway revival that just didn’t get it right? We have, too. In this camp experience, students will become a creative team for a Broadway revival, tasked with creating a new vision for a beloved and well-known show. Students will then pitch the show to a mock Shark Tank-like panel of industry professionals, any of whom could potentially invest in the project. This is an exciting, well-rounded experience for budding actors, producers and directors alike!

This course focuses on close-up magic skills, and the tricks used to engage and entertain an audience. A magic supply kit will be provided to each student, and no prior experience is necessary! This six-week session concludes with a public performance.
